For this chocolate cake, you’ll need the following ingredients.

  • All-Purpose Flour
  • Sugar
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • Baking Powder
  • Baking Soda
  • Salt
  • Espresso Powder – I go into more detail about espresso powder below.
  • Milk - You can also use buttermilk, almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk.
  • Oil - You can use vegetable, canola, or melted coconut oil for the oil.
  • Eggs – when baking, I like to use room temperature eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • Boiling water

Ingredients

•2 cups all-purpose flour
•2 cups sugar
•3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
•2 teaspoons baking powder
•1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
•1 teaspoon salt
•1 teaspoon espresso powder homemade or store-bought
•1 cup milk or buttermilk, almond, or coconut milk
•1/2 cup vegetable oil or canola oil, or melted coconut oil
•2 large eggs
•2 teaspoons vanilla extract
•1 cup boiling water

Step-by-Step Instructions

STEP 1
Prep. Preheat the oven to 350ยบ F. Spray or butter and lightly flour two 9-inch cake pans.

STEP 2
Whisk dry ingredients. In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder. Whisk to combine, or use your paddle attachment to stir through the flour mixture until thoroughly combined.

STEP 3
Mix in wet ingredients. Mix flour, milk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla together on medium speed until fully blended. Reduce the speed to low and slowly pour hot water into the cake batter until it is thoroughly incorporated.

STEP 4
Bake. Divide the cake batter evenly between the two cake pans. Bake the chocolate cake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick or cake tester inserted into the center comes out clean.

STEP 5
Remove from the oven and set aside for 10 minutes before removing from the pan and cooling completely.

STEP 6
Frost cake with Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

The addition of espresso powder in both the chocolate cake and the chocolate frosting, in my opinion, was one of the ingredients that really made this cake recipe come to life. If you haven't tried a little espresso in your chocolate baking yet, you should.

The espresso works similarly to vanilla extract in elevating the flavors, and I now consider it an essential part of my spice cabinet.

Next, I'll teach you how to make chocolate buttercream frosting, which will make our chocolate cake even more delicious.

CHOCOLATE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

This buttercream frosting comes together quickly with just six simple ingredients. This recipe makes enough frosting for a three-layer cake or three dozen cupcakes.

Ingredients

To make this frosting, you'll need the following ingredients.

  • butter – softened.
  • unsweetened cocoa
  • confectioner’s sugar – also called powdered sugar
  • milk
  • vanilla extract.
  • espresso powder – this adds a such a richness to the frosting further enhances the amazing chocolate flavor. This little extra ingredient heightens the deliciousness even more!
Ingredients

•1½ cups butter softened
•1 cup unsweetened cocoa
•5 cups confectioner’s sugar
•½ cup milk
•2 teaspoons vanilla extract
•½ teaspoon espresso powder

To make this delectable frosting, you'll need a large mixing bowl or a large bowl for a stand mixer.

Step-by-Step Instructions

STEP 1
In a large mixing bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer, combine cocoa. Remove any lumps with a whisk.

STEP 2
Cream together the butter and cocoa powder until well combined.

STEP 3
Add 1 cup of sugar and 1 tablespoon of milk to cocoa mixture. After each addition has been combined, turn the mixer to high speed for about a minute. Repeat until all of the sugar and milk have been added.

STEP 4
Add vanilla extract and espresso powder and combine well.

STEP 5
If the frosting appears too dry, add a tablespoon of milk at a time until it reaches the desired consistency. If it appears wet and does not hold its shape, add more confectioner's sugar, a tablespoon at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.

And that's it! Now you can bake yourself or your family and friends a Chocolate Cake  with a Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.

Hope you guys learn something from this blog!
